Athletics

  • For the past few weeks and future few weeks I have been going to the gym quite frequently.  I got an awesome deal at one of the best gyms in Boston – Healthworks – which is an all-female gym, and gets high reviews on yelp.  I only pay $1/day via a deal I got on Groupon, this amazing website that has different daily deals for most of the major large cities.  The catch is that a certain # of people have to sign up for the deal to be activated, but that threshold is almost always surpassed.  My Healthworks membership was $39 for 39 days which was perfect for the time being since my MIT gym card expired, and I’m leaving for China soon so I didn’t need a long-term membership.  Also Healthworks usually costs around $90/month, so huge savings there.

  • I’ve starting using the erg as part of my workout routine.  Sometimes the rows of ellipticals, treadmills, and other cardio machines are packed, but the ergs are never in use.  My new goal is to become part of the 1 million meter club, then you get a free t-shirt from Concept2.  At other million meter milestones you get even better prizes.  I like the incentive, as if the muscle toning and cardio wasn’t enough!  That will take at least another year though.  Look at all the muscles used!http://www.concept2.com/us/training/muscles_used.asp

  • I was very inspired by Tom Watson at the British Open this past weekend.  I was rooting for him, I mean if I could play like Watson at 59 years old I’d be really happy, or even if I could have his consistency right now at 22.  He held the lead all the way until the end, but sadly just couldn’t pull it off in the playoff.

Duck Tour!

After 5 years of living in Boston, I finally went on a Duck Tour!  I always viewed the tours as more of a tourist activity, after all I like to think that I’m familiar with Boston after a) walking the freedom trail multiple times b) taking the T everywhere and wandering about the city for years c) having visited Boston every year of my life since my grandparents live outside the city.  Regardless, I caved in and decided that indeed I did want to go on a Duck Tour after all these years, and went along with my friend Wen-fai!  As you can see she was super excited, especially having her early morning 9AM coffee. Yes, we went at 9am because we did not want to pay the online convenience fee.  The tours were Sold Out online, but the company releases more tickets day of, so we went to the ticket booth when they opened to get on the next earliest tour not sold out…which we expected to be later in the day, but was actually at 10AM.

Our con”duck”tor was General Lee Lost and as we drove around the city he explained to us the history of Boston.  While I’d seen pretty much everything on the tour before, I did learn some new facts about the city.  The gold-leafed state house dome was so much shinier than I remembered, it was cool to be on the Charles River (but not in it) as always, and to get up closer to the Zakim Bridge as shown in the pics below.  Summer 2009-1

Several of the new things I learned about Boston which may or may not be interesting(I already knew the majority of the interesting landmarks and history):

  • There’s a large tiffany glass collection in a church on Boylston
  • Nancy Kerrigan got married in a church in Boston on Newbury
  • There is a really nice looking riverfront prison in Boston
  • They are building the 2nd largest skate park in the country underneath the huge highway overpass loop portion of the big dig
  • I learned more of the exact locations of some of the events of the Revolutionary War
  • On the side of the Longfellow bridge, a bridge I have walked over many times, there is this interesting fish/ship display, which I have never noticed before!

I’m glad I went on the duck tour, and it was nice to hang out with Wen-Fai as well!  On the walk home I saw a plane sky writing, something I’m not sure I’ve witnessed before!  I couldn’t make out the whole phrase, but in this pic it almost looks like Heart The Red Sox!

July 4th!

This is the 3rd summer I’ve been in Boston, and thus my 3rd time seeing the Boston Pops/Fireworks July 4th spectacular! The fireworks are shot off a barge sitting in the middle of the Charles River between the Longfellow and Mass Ave bridge.  The first time I stood on the Mass Ave bridge, which is closed off to traffic for the holiday, craned my neck up, and watched the display.  The second time, I went to a party and stood on a rooftop in Boston, again craning my neck up to look at the explosions in the sky.  This time was going to be different.

My friend Nisha has taken up kayaking recently and suggested that we kayak on the Charles River and watch the fireworks from there!  I’ve been kayaking a few times, and agreed that sounded like a fun plan.

001_1 We grabbed our sea kayaks from Charles River Canoe and Kayaks and headed 3.5 miles down the river to where the action was located.  We paddled around the masses of boats floating near the barges but decided that was not a good area for us to be-it was crowded, would require us to crane our neck to see the fireworks, and overwhelmingly smelled of awful gasoline.  It was a hard battle back upriver with the blinding sun, wind, and waves, but we kept paddling around in search of the ideal viewing location.  It was a bit difficult to do so as we kept on getting pushed down the river toward the boats we wanted to avoid, but by the time the fireworks show started at 10:30 (6 hours after we had launched) we had a perfect viewing location, no neck craning involved.  It was like super high definition tv while floating on a river in the dark- an interesting sensation.

21 minutes later we turned around and paddled back upriver.  We had 1.5 hours to make it back to the rental location.  By this point, we were both getting tired, were being knocked around by the ‘interesting’ wakes of boats also heading back home.  One time I turned around and there was a huge boat in back of Nisha’s relatively tiny kayak blowing its horn at her.  It was a bit scary to be on the river in the dark with the possibility of getting run over by large boats.  All we had signaling our presence was 4 glow sticks, 2 very bright ones, and 2 very weak ones.  About an hour and 15 minutes later we made it back to the the dock, and hobbled our way back to the car.  I was a long and tiring journey, but I’m glad I did it!
